future of the news media?

The current Atlantic Monthly has a number of good media-related articles.  I don’t usually buy magazines in the airport, but this issue was too good to pass up, especially “The story behind the story” by Mark Bowden.media-wideThe promotion of views by the ideological blogosphere voices finds its way into the mainstream press.  See also the recent Times analysis of the Americans for Limited Government’s Bill Wilson, and his success in attacking President Obama. The ability of people to express political opinions is a good thing, but what about journalism’s responsibility to do its own checking without swallowing these charges out of context–as they did with the case of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.  Two major clips of her comments uncovered by bloggers found their way into the major television networks, without the kind of context journalists have traditionally provided.
