the centrist Times

I would argue that the New York Times comes as close as any publication to providing a window into the centrist elite viewpoint in the U.S.  Yesterday’s lead editorial gives you an idea of how the institutional voice has decided to weigh in on the current campaign.  It’s prominence means it will be noticed and given special weight.  The irony of the Times’ role is that while candidates such as McCain and Palin find it a useful political strategy to attack the alleged partisanship of the Times, they also find it convenient to cite the Times in referring to facts they wish to lend special credibility, such as the front page article a few days ago on the connection between Obama and William Ayers.
