Cedric Benson and the APD (excerpts from the American Statesman)

Oct. 5, 2008

Benson’s defenders say he was targeted by officers because he’s a well-known African American. The authorities have said the arrests were legitimate and the arresting officers did their duty.

Benson was arrested by officers with the Lower Colorado River Authority for boating while intoxicated. He was in town for Mother’s Day weekend and was the host of a party on his boat. The guests included his mother, Jackie.

Benson also was charged with resisting arrest.

On June 7, Benson was pulled over for suspicion of drunken driving after he left a bar in downtown Austin. He had been with his mother earlier in the day to celebrate her birthday.

We’ll discuss tomorrow issues of racial profiling, and consider a particular case from a program on the ABC News program: Nightline.
