In all the spin of the modern campaign, the formal presidential debates are a rare opportunity to actually see two candidates grapple with facts, issues, and positions.  In the “mediatized” U.S. political environment, this is a more European style opportunity for candidates to speak directly to voters.  Too bad there are so few of these moments.  Here are the two candidates, without the benefit of spinmeisters, editing and other kinds of filtering.  Debates have been a significant object of communication research since the time of the first televised debates between Nixon and Kennedy.  I hope you watched this crucial manifestation of the “forum” function of the media.
