Race on campus

The upcoming debate on the campus of the University of Mississippi recalls the difficult history of that institution with racial reconciliation, as told in a fascinating review in today’s Times.  UT-Austin has had its own history, including controversy over the presence on campus of memorials to confederate figures.  The present diversity theme of class leads to questioning the underlying meaning of cultural practices with regard to power relationships (including in the case of Ole Miss the singing of “Dixie” and the confederate flag).
