claims vs. evidence

Journalists struggle with how far to go in making claims, particularly about candidates.  The “public editor” of the Times is theoretically the people’s representative, questioning the paper’s performance on behalf of readers. In today’s column he thought the Times was on safe ground with its evidence, when it took the difficult step of charging McCain with greater distortions than Obama.
